Description of each type of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes - also called "Juvenile Onset Diabetes"
insulin-dependent diabetes mellitusType 1 diabetes makes up only 5-10 % of all types of diabetes cases. It appears typically in young children, but can occur in adolescents. It is caused by an autoimmune response that destroys cells of the pancreas so that they can no longer produce insulin. Many researchers today believe Type 1 Diabetes is caused by an allergic reaction to cow’s milk in children. People with Type 1 diabetes are dependent on insulin because their bodies do not make it. However, an improved diet can boost manageability and reduce the amount of insulin that is necessary on a daily basis. A healthy lifestyle can also deter the long term negative health consequences of Type 1 Diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes also called "Adult Onset Diabetes"
non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitusType 2 Diabetes is commonly referred to as “adult onset diabetes” because traditionally only people over 40 got the disease. However today, younger and younger people are getting diabetes symptoms, even children. The disease begins with insulin resistance when the cells of the body do not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas produces more and more insulin to keep up with the demand. Eventually, the pancreas cannot secrete enough insulin to keep up with the person’s food intake.
Gestational Diabetes (only in women)
Gestational diabetes is caused by the hormones of pregnancy or by a shortage of insulin. This form of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born.
