Type 2 Diabetes Treatment
Most type 2 diabetes treatments address the symptoms and not the cause of diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes treatments are generally focused on insulin resistance. While for most type 2 diabetics the pancreas produces plenty of insulin for the body’s needs, the insulin is not able to get into the cells where it is needed to regulate blood sugar. Many believe that type 2 diabetes is caused by excess sugar consumption. However, current research is finding that diabetes is strongly related to fat, both fat on the body and fat consumed in food. Type 2 diabetes is rare in populations where fat intake is low and people are thin. Type 2 diabetes treatment needs to address the true cause of diabetes, not just the symptoms.
Study shows high fat diet can make a healthy person diabetic!
James Anderson, M.D., professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky College of medicine and a widely respected authority on diabetes, studied the effect of diet on blood sugar levels. He found it was possible to take lean healthy men and turn them into diabetics in less than two weeks by feeding them a rich 65% fat diet. Another group was fed a pound of sugar every day and a low 10% fat diet. The sugar diet did not cause diabetes for any of the subjects even after eleven weeks.(1)
Traditional treatment only attempts to "control" type 2 diabetes.
Traditional type 2 diabetes treatment focuses on controlling blood sugar levels. The standard treatment recommends the American Diabetes Association (ADA) diet and providing medications to increase insulin receptivity of the cells. Some diabetics also need supplemental insulin. However, the best patients could hope for was to “control” their diabetes in order to delay the onset of diabetes complications such as blindness, kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, and more etc.
Modern treatment addresses the cause of diabetes.
Modern type 2 diabetes treatment focuses on eliminating the cause of the insulin resistance - excess fat in the diet and in the body. These successful type 2 diabetes treatments include regular aerobic exercise along with a plant-based diet, drastically reducing or eliminating meats, high-fat dairy products and processed oils. These treatments encourage the increased consumption of grains, legumes and vegetables. One study(2) found that 21 of 23 patients on oral diabetes medications and 13 of 17 patients on insulin were able to get off of their medications after 26 days on a near-vegetarian diet and exercise program. When these patients were interviewed two and three years later, most had maintained their health benefits.
Low-fat, vegetarian diets are ideal for people who want to improve or eliminate their diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes Diet Suggestions
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Georgetown University looked at the health benefits of a low-fat, unrefined, vegan diet (excluding all animal products) in people with type 2 diabetes in 1999 (2). One group of diabetics were allowed to eat unlimited portions of vegetables, grains and legumes. Another group of diabetics followed the American Diabetes Association recommended diet guidelines. After three months data from the two groups were compared.
The results were astounding.
Those on the plant-based diet lowered their fasting blood sugars 59% more than those following the ADA diet. Many in the first group discontinued their medications, while none in the ADA group were able to do so. Those on the vegan diet lost an average of 16 pounds, compared to those on the ADA diet who lost only about 8 pounds. The plant-based diet group had other benefits including substantial decreases in their cholesterol levels compared to the ADA group. People with Type 2 diabetes predictably see improvement on a low-fat vegan diet.
Type 2 Diabetes Diet Suggestions
Exercise is essential.
An additional component that is essential for managing diabetes is exercise. Evidence has shown that muscles in motion reduce resistance to insulin. Regular exercise helps sugar go out of the blood and into the muscle tissue. This is a great help to diabetics desiring to control their blood sugar levels. Exercise can help those with type 2 diabetes reduce or eliminate their need for insulin injections or oral medications.
Don't be short changed.
People with type 2 diabetes are shortchanged by the typical ADA diet which is still high in fat and cholesterol. The medications used to control diabetes have side effects which can include kidney damage. Are you serious about improving and quite possibly eliminating the need for diabetes medication?
