What does the name "diabetes" mean?

Like most disease names, the term diabetes is derived from terms that describe its most prominent symptoms.

"Diabetes" is derived from the Greek verb “diabainein.”

dia = “across, apart”

bainein = “to walk, stand”

Diabainein meant “to stride, walk, or stand with legs asunder”

Its derivative meant “one that straddles” or more precisely “ a compass, siphon.”

The understanding of siphon alludes to the use of diabetes as a name for a disease involving the discharge of excessive amounts of urine.
